How to Get to the Togean Islands: A Complete Guide to Routes, Boats & Transport
The Togean Islands lie in the middle of the Gulf of Tomini, in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The archipelago stretches from south to north, with its northernmost islands located near the equator.
Geographically, the Togean Islands lie relatively close to the southern coast of the Gulf of Tomini, making Ampana the main gateway from the south. From the northern side, travellers can reach the islands via Gorontalo.
Administratively, the Togean Islands are part of Tojo Una-Una Regency, whose capital is Ampana.
The archipelago can be reached from several directions, but Ampana and Gorontalo are the two main gateways with regular boat services to the islands.
Wakai is a major transit hub and one of the busiest settlements in the Togean Islands. Regular boats from Ampana and Gorontalo serve Wakai as a main arrival point. From there, travellers can continue by local boat or speedboat to their chosen island and accommodation.
Since accommodation is spread across different islands, choosing the right route and transport connection is an important part of planning your trip.
How to Get to the Togean Islands from Ampana
Ampana is the main gateway for travellers exploring Central Sulawesi. From here, there are three main transport options to the Togean Islands: passenger speedboats, public passenger boats and ferries.
1. Passenger Speedboats from Ampana to Wakai

Passenger speedboats are a practical option for travellers who want to reach Wakai in a relatively short time.
Since mid-2026, speedboat services on the Ampana–Wakai–Ampana route have expanded with the introduction of SB Numa, which can carry up to 50 passengers. Previously, the route was mainly served by SB Hercules, with a capacity of 18 passengers.
The journey from Ampana to Wakai takes approximately two hours.
SB Numa schedule
- Ampana to Wakai: departs at 09:00 WITA and arrives at approximately 11:00 WITA.
- Wakai to Ampana: departs at 12:00 WITA.
SB Hercules schedule (only for high session)
- Wakai to Ampana: departs at 09:00 WITA and arrives at approximately 11:00 WITA.
- Ampana to Wakai: departs at 12:00 WITA and arrives at approximately 14:00 WITA.
These departures give travellers a choice of morning or midday connections, depending on their arrival in Ampana and onward travel plans.
Speedboats are suitable for travellers who want to save time and continue to accommodation around Wakai or on other islands. If your accommodation is located farther away, remember to arrange the onward boat transfer from the port to your destination.
2. Public Passenger Boats

Public passenger boats are an essential part of everyday life in the Togean Islands. These larger vessels can carry more than 100 passengers and transport considerably more goods than speedboats.
They are an economical option, particularly for local residents travelling between islands for daily activities and essential supplies.
The journey from Ampana to Wakai usually takes around four hours. Some boats continue to other ports and settlements in the archipelago, including Katupat, Malenge and Dolong in the Walea Kepulauan area.
These longer routes allow passengers to reach certain destinations directly without always transferring in Wakai.
Public passenger boat schedule
- Ampana to the Togean Islands: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, departing at 09:00 WITA.
- Return journeys from the islands to Ampana: Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
These boats are suitable for travellers on a flexible schedule, those looking for a more economical option, or those heading to destinations served directly by the route.
Because the boats may stop at several ports, the total journey time depends on your final destination.
3. The Ampana–Wakai–Gorontalo Ferry

The ferry connects the Ampana area, the Togean Islands and Gorontalo. It is widely used by local residents travelling with vehicles, motorcycles or larger amounts of luggage and cargo.
The ferry port serving the Ampana area is located in Uebone. From there, the ferry sails to Wakai before continuing to Gorontalo.
Ferry departures from Uebone to Wakai:
- Monday
- Thursday
The journey from Uebone to Wakai usually takes around six hours. After arriving in Wakai, the ferry continues towards Gorontalo in the afternoon. The sea crossing from Wakai to Gorontalo takes approximately 10–12 hours, with much of the journey taking place overnight.
The ferry is a suitable choice for travellers who want to bring their own vehicle or carry more luggage. However, because the journey takes longer, it is better suited to travellers with a flexible itinerary.
How to Get to the Togean Islands from Gorontalo
Gorontalo is the northern gateway to the Togean Islands. This route is convenient for travellers starting in North Sulawesi, exploring Manado and Gorontalo, or arriving directly at Djalaluddin Airport in Gorontalo.
The main regular transport option from Gorontalo to the Togean Islands is the ferry operating on the Gorontalo–Wakai–Ampana route.
Ferry departures from Gorontalo:
- Tuesday afternoon
- Friday afternoon
The crossing from Gorontalo to Wakai takes approximately 10–12 hours. The ferry generally arrives the following morning, depending on sailing conditions and the operating schedule.
Upon arrival in Wakai, travellers can continue by local boat or speedboat to the island where they are staying.
The Gorontalo route is particularly suitable for travellers combining the Togean Islands with North Sulawesi and Gorontalo. However, because the ferry operates on specific days, your overland travel and flight schedules should be planned around the sailing days.
An Alternative Route from Marisa
Travellers who do not want to wait for the ferry can consider an alternative route via Marisa, in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province.
From Gorontalo City, the drive to Marisa takes approximately 3–4 hours. From there, travellers can arrange a private speedboat to Una-Una Island, Malenge Island or other parts of the Togean Islands, depending on the destination agreed upon with the local boat operator.
For certain destinations, the sea journey from Marisa takes approximately 2–3 hours. Actual travel time depends on the destination, speedboat engine capacity, weather and sea conditions.
This is not a regular public boat service. A private speedboat must be arranged in advance.
The advantage is greater flexibility, allowing travellers to plan their journey without waiting for the scheduled ferry from Gorontalo.
An Alternative Direct Route from Bunta or Baompon
Travellers arriving from Luwuk and Banggai can also consider a direct sea route from the Bunta area to the Togean Islands.
There are two possible departure points: Bunta Port and Baompon Port, located in Pongian Village, Bunta District, Banggai Regency.
From either port, travellers can hire a small longboat or speedboat to cross directly to the Togean Islands.
For certain destinations, the sea crossing can take approximately two hours. Travel time depends on the destination island, engine capacity and sea conditions.
The main advantage is that travellers can avoid the longer drive to Ampana. They may also avoid transferring in Wakai if the chartered boat can take them directly to their accommodation.
Depending on the departure point, ferry connections and final destination, this route can save anything from around two hours to a full day compared with an itinerary that requires transit through Ampana.
However, this route relies on private boat arrangements rather than regular scheduled services. Departure times, routes and costs must be agreed upon with the local operator.
For travellers planning to combine the Banggai Islands and the Togean Islands in one trip, Bunta or Baompon can be an interesting alternative.
How to Get to the Togean Islands from Luwuk
Luwuk is an important gateway for travellers arriving at Syukuran Aminuddin Amir Airport or exploring the Banggai Islands before continuing to the Togean Islands.
From Luwuk, there are two main options: travelling via Ampana or taking a chartered boat from Bunta or Baompon.
Option 1: Luwuk–Ampana–Wakai
The drive from Luwuk to Ampana usually takes around 5–6 hours.
Travellers choosing this route can spend the night in Ampana and continue to Wakai the following day by passenger speedboat.
This option is suitable for travellers who prefer scheduled transport and a passenger boat with a larger capacity.
Staying overnight in Ampana also allows you to rest after the overland journey before continuing by sea.
Option 2: Luwuk–Bunta/Baompon–Togean
Travellers who want to save time can drive from Luwuk to Bunta or Baompon. The journey usually takes around 3–4 hours.
From the port, the trip can continue directly to the chosen island by chartered speedboat or longboat.
If you leave Luwuk in the morning and conditions are favourable, you may be able to reach the Togean Islands by the afternoon.
This option is particularly attractive for travellers with limited time or those who want to combine the Banggai Islands and the Togean Islands without returning to Ampana first.
Because this route depends on the availability of a chartered boat and sea conditions, transport arrangements should be made before departure.
Choosing the Right Gateway to the Togean Islands
The best gateway depends on where you arrive in Sulawesi and which other destinations you want to visit.
The Togean Islands’ location in the Gulf of Tomini makes it possible to plan an itinerary from the south, north, east or west of Sulawesi.
From the South: Makassar, Toraja and Tentena
Travellers starting in Makassar or Toraja can continue overland to Tentena, Lake Poso or the Bada Valley before travelling to Ampana and taking a boat to the Togean Islands.
This route is ideal for travellers who want to combine cultural experiences, mountain landscapes, lakes, megalithic sites and tropical islands in one journey.
From the North: Manado and Gorontalo
Travellers exploring North Sulawesi can continue to Gorontalo and take the ferry to Wakai.
Since the ferry operates on specific days, the itinerary should be planned around the sailing schedule.
If you want to avoid waiting for the ferry, you can consider travelling by road to Marisa and arranging a private speedboat to the Togean Islands.
From the East: Luwuk and the Banggai Islands
Travellers who want to visit the Banggai Islands before heading to Togean can start their journey in Luwuk.
After exploring Banggai, they can travel via Ampana and take a regular passenger speedboat to Wakai, or use a chartered boat from Bunta or Baompon.
This route makes it possible to combine Banggai’s beaches, waterfalls, lakes and islands with the coral reefs, tropical islands and maritime culture of the Togean Islands.
From the West: Palu and Central Sulawesi
Palu is another option for travellers who want to explore Central Sulawesi before visiting the Togean Islands.
The overland journey from Palu to Ampana usually takes around eight hours, depending on road conditions, the vehicle and rest stops.
Travellers can choose between a private or chartered car and a shared passenger minibus.
Shared minibuses from Palu have scheduled departures at 09:00 and 17:00 WITA. Travellers taking the 17:00 departure generally arrive in Ampana around dawn, allowing them to continue by the 09:00 passenger speedboat from Ampana Port.
This option can help travellers save time, but it is still wise to leave a buffer in case the road journey takes longer than expected.

Weather and Sea Conditions
Travel to the Togean Islands depends heavily on weather and sea conditions. Wind, waves and rain can affect comfort and journey times, especially on routes using chartered speedboats or longboats.
Travellers using either scheduled boats or private charters should pay attention to local conditions and follow the instructions of the operator and boat captain.
For chartered journeys from Bunta, Baompon or Marisa, the distance to the destination, boat capacity and sea conditions on the day all need to be considered.
If your itinerary includes several destinations in Sulawesi, allow some extra time before onward flights or other connections. A flexible schedule can help prevent a change in sea conditions from disrupting the entire trip.
Why Transport Planning Matters in the Togean Islands
Getting to the Togean Islands is only part of the journey. Many accommodations are located on separate islands, so travellers may need an additional boat transfer from the arrival port to their accommodation.
Before setting off, make sure you know:
- Which island and accommodation you are heading to.
- Which arrival port is most suitable.
- Whether you need a scheduled boat or a private charter.
- How to arrange the transfer from Wakai to your accommodation.
- What alternatives are available if sea conditions change.
If you plan to combine the Togean Islands with Banggai, Lake Poso, the Bada Valley or other destinations in Central Sulawesi, arranging transport in advance can make the journey much more efficient.
WAYAWtour is based in Ampana and understands the local transport connections to the Togean Islands. We can help you plan your route, inter-island transfers and itinerary around the time you have available and the experiences you want to enjoy.
